How this service works

Cotswolds Electrician is an independent referral service. Seventeen Things Ltd runs it. We are not an electrical contractor, and we do not do electrical work ourselves.

You fill in a short form. You tell us the type of work, your town and how to contact you. We pass your enquiry to one local electrician who is registered with NICEIC or NAPIT.

The electrician contacts you directly. They ask questions, arrange a visit if needed and give you a quote. You decide if you want to use them. There is no charge to you for the referral.

We send each enquiry to one electrician only. You will not get calls from a long list of firms.

Electrical work in old Cotswold homes

Many Cotswold homes have thick limestone walls, low ceilings and old timber floors. Wiring in these homes can be decades old. Some of it may date from before modern safety rules.

Stone walls make it harder to hide new cables. An electrician may run cables under floors, in roof spaces or in surface trunking. Each method has a different effect on how the room looks.

Many town centres in the area are conservation areas. Many buildings are listed. If your home is listed, you may need listed building consent for changes that affect its character. This can include some electrical work. Ask your local council before work starts.

Why you should use a registered electrician

Part P of the Building Regulations covers electrical safety in homes in England. Some work is notifiable. This includes a new circuit, a new consumer unit, and some work near a bath or shower.

An electrician who is registered with a competent person scheme, such as NICEIC or NAPIT, can self-certify notifiable work. The scheme then tells your council. You get a Building Regulations compliance certificate.

Keep this certificate with your house papers. A buyer, a mortgage lender or an insurer can ask for it. Without it, you may need to pay for a council inspection later.

All work must meet BS 7671, the national standard for electrical installations.

How to check an electrician

Ask the electrician which scheme they are registered with. Then check their name on that scheme's website. NICEIC and NAPIT both have a search tool for registered firms. You can also search the Electrical Competent Person Register online.

Ask for a written quote that says what is included. Ask which certificates you will get when the work is done. For most work, you get an Electrical Installation Certificate or a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate.
